Removing mould properly
Wiping visible mould off a seat achieves very little. The spores are in the foam, the underlay and the ventilation system, and surface cleaning leaves all of that intact to come back within weeks.\n\nDoing it properly means hot-water extraction through fabric and carpet, treating the vents and cabin filter, an antimicrobial application, and then getting the interior genuinely dry. Badly affected cars occasionally need a second visit once everything has dried and any surviving patches show themselves.
Keeping it from returning
A few things genuinely help. Park undercover if you possibly can. Run the air conditioning on fresh air for the last few minutes of a drive to dry the evaporator. Replace the cabin filter roughly annually - here, not every three years as the manual suggests. And never leave damp towels, gym gear or wet swimmers in the car overnight.\n\nIf your car smells musty when it has been shut up, that is mould starting, not just stale air. It is far cheaper to deal with then.

Can you get mould out of car seats and carpet?
In most cases yes, using hot-water extraction and antimicrobial treatment rather than surface cleaning. Where mould has taken hold deep in foam or underlay, some staining may remain even after the mould itself is dealt with.
Why does my car smell musty when the air con is on?
Usually mould or bacteria on the evaporator and in the ducting behind the dash. Cleaning the interior alone will not fix it - the ventilation system and cabin filter have to be treated too.
How long does mould treatment take?
Longer than a standard interior detail - typically most of a day, because extraction and drying cannot be rushed. Severe cases may need a follow-up visit.
