Paint correction and machine polishing

Removing defects rather than hiding them - which is the difference between a result that lasts and one that washes off in a month.

What correction fixes

Most cars that look tired are not suffering from dirt. They are covered in fine scratches that scatter light - swirl marks from washing, marring from automatic car washes, and oxidation from UV exposure. Under direct sun you see them as a haze or a spiderweb pattern.

Machine polishing levels the surface so light reflects cleanly again. The gloss that comes back is the paint's own, not a coating.

What it will not fix

Scratches deep enough to catch a fingernail have gone through the clear coat, and no amount of polishing brings those back without removing more material than the panel can spare. Same for stone chips and any area where the clear coat has already begun to peel or flake.

We will tell you which category your paint falls into before starting, because there is no value in you paying for a full correction on a panel that needs respraying.

Why it takes a full day

Clear coat is typically well under a tenth of a millimetre thick, and every correction consumes a little of it. That budget is finite across the life of the car, which is why correction is done carefully, panel by panel, at a pace that lets the operator read the paint as they go.

Anyone offering to correct a whole car in two hours is either using fillers or taking risks with your clear coat.

Correction and coating together

Correction and ceramic coating are natural partners, in that order. Correcting restores the paint; coating protects the restored finish and keeps washing from reintroducing the same swirls.

Doing them the other way around locks the defects in for years. If you are considering both, book them together.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is paint correction?

Machine polishing that removes a microscopic layer of clear coat to level out defects - swirl marks, wash scratches, oxidation and light etching. Because material is removed rather than filled, the improvement is permanent until new damage occurs.

How is that different from a cut and polish?

In practice the terms overlap, but a lot of cheap cut-and-polish work uses glazes and fillers that mask defects temporarily. Those look excellent on collection day and wash out within weeks. Correction removes the defect itself.

Can every scratch be polished out?

No. If your fingernail catches in it, the scratch has gone through the clear coat and polishing will not remove it without going too deep. Those need touch-up or respray. Swirls, wash marks, buffer trails and oxidation almost always come out.

How long does it take?

Usually a full day for a single-stage correction on a mid-size car, and longer for multi-stage work on badly deteriorated paint. It cannot be rushed - clear coat is finite and aggressive work on a tight schedule is how paint gets ruined.
