Cane dust and ash are abrasive, and dragging a cloth across a dry panel grinds them into the clear coat - this is the single biggest cause of swirl marks on cars in the southern corridor.\n\nRinse thoroughly first so the grit floats off, then wash with plenty of lubrication and a clean mitt. If the haze is already there, paint correction is what removes it.

A protected surface does not attract less dust, but it gives it far less to hold onto, so a rinse actually clears the panel instead of smearing it.
